If you read the statement by their lawyer and neighbor in my first post
you will see that living in Washington the atmosphere is quite a bit
different. Wilson said he was an ex-diplomat, that can be checked.
Plame said she was a consultant, the neighbor construed that to mean
she was really working for anyone and to dig deeper might bring out a
plea for help in finding a job.

The saying without saying you work for the CIA is something like "I
work for the government", or "I have a job with the Air Force" or
something that lets those in the know, know. That is why Valerie
Plame's traceable Brewster-Jennings and Associates was so valuable, she
really worked at a real job for a company on Dun and Bradstreet.

I went through that for about 6-7 months while Richard Nixon tried to
decide whether the Feds could hire more people or not. I would apply
for a job and give my former (Federal) employ and more or less admit I
had been fired. Hard to explain that being fired for being right is not
a permanent brand but it was then.

A lot of your gray is from the shadows thrown by the CIA not releasing
anything about Plame or Wilson's trip. I am sure there are some nice
files that describe one form of the various stories but those don't get
into the public eye. I am not even certain Fitzgerald got a look at
them, or if he did he agreed to not disclose the contents.
