God, Jack, you really are naive. The photo doesn't look all that
different from normal crew accommodations of the same period (racks
stacked 4 high with 3' walkways in between) except for all the poorly
stowed gear. It sounds as if the misery of Marines was
self-inflicted. After all, if they don't wash and vomit on the deck
and let it lie there, whose fault is that?

Well, the thing about the bridge is that they don't let you live and
sleep up there. Conditions in crew quarters are only better because
sailors generally actually wash and clean up things.
