Well for a start you need to distinguish between engines and steam
production. The actual engines in cases 1A, and 2A would be identical
and the same applies for I B and II B. You also need to distinguish
between external and internal combustion. Internal combustion engines
(diesel and petrol) were largely confined to auxillary craft such as
Coastal Motor Boats.

As for capital ships carrying both coal and oil. The first use of
oil was as a boost for coal fired boilers. For the UK coal had
advantages, it did not have to be imported and the bunkers could be
used to provide protection. However oil was much easier to store, it
could be put in places where coal could not be recovered from.

Don't know but the Harvey towed torpedo dates from the 1880s and was
arranged to to at an angle of about 60 degrees from the ship.

Ships had to fuel in harbour, colliers with special handling gear for
coal were used and also tankers. RN use of diesel and petrol was
confined to harbours.
