The myopic shift of early cataract can easily precede visible brunescence or
haze. That's my guess.
What are the possibilities?
Keratoconus - there is no big change in astigmatism
Posterior staphyloma - the fundus wasn't examined but PS doesn't develop
suddenly at age 49
Diabetes - both eyes didn't change
Nuclear Sclerosis - easily explains 2D of myopic shift, and it explains the
reduced corrected VA.
Many 50-year-olds with asymmetric cataracts have a history of trauma to the
affected eye.
