My earliest memory is of about 12 or 13 months. I remember when my folks
tried to get me to wear my first pair of shoes. They were little white
leathery shoes. I refused to put them on. I threw a little tantrum. I
remember the room I was sitting in and the toys I was playing with and the
basket that the toys went in. I don't have continuous memories from the
time I was one to the time I was 4. But I can remember certain specific
events. Or the emotions tied in to them even if my vocabulary was quite
limited to store events into language. I noticed my daughter who is 21,
until a few years ago had vivid memories of early childhood, but within the
last few years she has forgotten many of those events. I don't think my son
remembers anything prior to the age of two and a half, and not sure when his
continuous memories start. This is a good question, and I will try to
probe my kids next time they come home from college.
