IOW combining the two would be like taking both Prozac and Effexor
(both SSRI's) for depression.

What he's probably heard is that combining [ONE of either Avodart OR
Proscar] AND one of the alpha-1 antagonists (Flomax, Uroxatral, etc)
is supposedly more efficacious, in fact there are some (dubious)
studies asserting this very point. Personally I'm unconvinced that
such a combination is of general use which is to say that there may be
small minorities for whom this combination will provide relief. IOW,
YMMV.
