Re: Thiazide Diuretics

This is just my personal opinion, but having just gone through laser
prostate surgery, please allow me:

If this gentleman has been suffering from "chronic" urinary retention,
and for quite awhile, I would strongly suggest getting him to a
competant urologist who has strong experience with laser prostate
surgery, to get the matter resolved once and for all, quickly!

If he goes into lock-up, he is in DEEP trouble.....

An elderly man I am caring for has just been given 12.5 mg
hydrochlorothiazide for hypertension, plus Cipro for what appears to
be acute prostatitis (but they're not sure about that part because
they couldn't detect the microbe). He had severe hematuria and very
high blood pressure. Now the hematuria is gone, but he can hardly
urinate. Of course, he has had chronic urinary retention for years,
but never so bad as this. He has a diet that has virtually no sodium
in it, and has been that way for years. I'm a little worried that this
diuretic may be making his urinary retention worse, in view of his BPH
and other factors. Is this possible? Should we stop the diuretic till
he can get the procedure done that will relieve the retention problem?
Oh, and by the way, this diuretic doesn't seem to be lowering his
blood pressure.
Thanks very much.
