I eat enough fiber a day to kill a cow :-)

Metamucil 3 times a day
Carrots, cauliflower, broccoli for lunch
Oatmeal (in skim milk)
Whole grain bread

My cholesterol numbers are very good, but I was diagnosed with
osteoporosis of the lower spine in November 2006. My pelvic DEXA
numbers were OK. I was 45 yrs old at that time.

My doctor thought that I wasn't getting enough Ca in my diet. The
blood test for Vit D was low as well.

He put me on Ca supplements and will repeat the dexa in 2 yrs (Nov
2008).
I now take 1 Ctracal, 1 Caltrate, 2000 IU of Vit D per day, along
with a cup of yoghurt and the skim kilk with my oatmeal.

Question: Is excessive intake of soluble fiber a factor in reducing
the absorption of Ca from the diet?

If so, is adding the supplements enough to offset this effect?

Eating vegetables high in fiber is fine as they are also high in
potassium but eating a lot of whole grains increases the acid load
(PRAL) of diet which is not good for the calcium metabolism. So, my
advice is to keep the intake of vegetables and fruits high but to
limit the intake of grains.

What about Metamucil 3 times a day? Is that OK?

Why do you use it? After all, your cholesterol numbers were OK as you said.

Can I offset the effect of grains intake by taking Ca and Vit D
supplements?

Metamucil may reduce the absorption of calcium and vitamin D. I would skip the product.

I take soluble fiber supplement to reduce my cholesterol. The numbers may go up if I stop.

The 30 second defecation is good too :-)

Maybe I should add another Caltrate pill to my diet?
