Re: osteoporosis meds

One of the things with Fosamax is that so many people stop taking it
for one reason or another. I learned recently that some research
studies had to be stopped just because of the drop out rate. It's one
reason why the drug industry hailed Boniva - once a month.

I admit to being a drop out for Fosamax a couple times.

Last year after I was off my feet for a few months because of knee
problems/ surgery, I had a drop in BD in my hips - so my physician
prescribed fosamx again. I took it for just a couple months....but
then stopped. {I know not a good idea but....]

In the meantime I read some reports of a new drug, strontium ranelate,
Protelos being approved in the EU [It is still under FDA reveiw so not
avialable in the US] but

I began to do some research about Protelos and found it has none of
the gastric side effect. Also, I then found some research about
natural strontium [protelos is a synthetic form - hence they can patent
it and earn big bucks]. Natural stronitum as positive on bones has
been around for ages [1910]... Mayo clinic did some research in the
50's. But up until now the drug companies could not make a synthetic
form they could patent so the research just lay there [sort of like all
the research by Upjohn company on olive leaf as an effective antiviral]

What I like about strontium is that it stimulates the osteoblasts
.....rather than inhibiting the osteoclasts sothe new bone should be
strong - nothing preventing the removal of older, weaker bone as with
some of the drugs.

Anyhow I found a producer of natural strontium who makes it without
calcium [the research says that calcium and strontium should not be
taken within 4 hrs of each other so I do not know why some companies
include calcium with strontium]. Anyhow I ordered some and have been
using it ....no side effects at all so far. I also am adding heavier
leg weights suggested in "strong women stay young" book. {I am lucky
to have a physician who keekps up with natural as well as pharmacy
research.... I can talk to about such things. She offeres advice but
in the end the decision is mine.]

I guess the next dexa scan will show if this is a good bone plan or
not.
......the strontium is much less expensive than the prescription drugs
and I have had not one moment of discomfort after taking it. so if it
works for me as well as some in the research, I shall be glad.

Of course I can try such things since I have been increasing my bone
density each year since I turned 62...so at age 70 I feel I have some
'wiggle room'. Anyhow I share this because like others, the negatives
coming out about fosamx are troubling.

If you want to read some about Protelos or Natural strontium, there
