Hello all
Over the last 20 to 25 years working as translator, German to English,
I have accumulated some large and useful terminology files
(most of these several hundred A4 pages each).
I have collected terminology by
- lifting it from specialist dictionaries and reference works,
- scanning lists acquired during stints working with various companies,
- gleaning terms from internet research, news groups, etc.
Nowadays I use these lists in preference to paper dictionaries
and even in preference to CD-ROMs.
The lists are all in MS-Word but with a minimum of formatting,
organized with German as the source and English as the target,
i.e. one column for German, one column for English,
and (in some cases) a third column for a field attribute.
With a bit of work, they could probably be turned round
for someone translating in the other direction.
They could, similarly, with a little revision, be modified
into pure text, CSV, or similar for importing into a database or CAT.
They could even be edited for printing out
(though this is not exactly the idea)
but this would mean changing the column widths to get them to fit on paper.
They cover the subjects :
01 machine tools,
02 cables,
03 printed circuit boards,
04 radio communications, satellite, etc.,
05 micro-electronics,
06 telephony, telecommunications,
07 computers, IT (emphasis on database management),
08 printing,
09 education,
10 automation, energy (pumps, turbines, etc.),
also a massive list of English and German abbreviations (all areas).
I would be interested in exchanging these lists for terminology files
for the same language combination, of similar volume and reliability,
and for my own ore related work areas, namely
measuring instruments, telecommunications, IT, logistics, automation, etc.,
or indeed other areas, e.g. financial
- anything but patent and pharmaceutical.
Or I would be willing to pass them on
- for a modest fee - to young colleagues starting up.
If anyone is interested, please e-mail me.
Best regards,
from Ray
