While m² is clearly the correct notation, there might be a potential
confusion in some older English-speakers' minds because of the
expression "two metres square" = 2 m x 2 m = 4 m² (when quoting room
sizes etc). A hangover from our schooldays, no doubt ...

So I gather you would write sq.ft., but not sq.m. - right?
