"But" is an adversative conjunction.
I see a contraposition both in your example and in mine.
Most Italians live in Italy but I live in Sweden although I am Italian.


in this case should be 'но'. You can use 'a' in cases where in English
sentence you can use 'and' instead of 'but'. So using 'но' you're
focussing that this is not the usual situation, using 'a' instead you
just mention that you're living in Sweden.
