It's even harder to get people to stop smoking, stop taking illegal
drugs, eat sensibly and exercise to maintain a healthy weight. How many
1000s of premature deaths per year could be avoided in that manner?
Human beings and the way we perceive and act upon risks is really
incomprehensible at times.

Exotic, weird risks are given more priority than "everday" risks like
living in a city below sea level, or living an unhealthy lifestyle.
