Re: Chile Mw 7.8 today

Per a report in Mexico's online "Chronicle of Today" at
http://www.cronica.com.mx/nota.php?id_nota=333102 , 1 woman was killed
in Tocopilla (a wall collapsed on her, and firefighters rescued her,
but she died at the hospital), dozens are reported injured, and
hundreds of adobe homes are damaged. There's also a major power outage
and I think phone service has been disrupted over a wide area, though
currently Chilean authorities report 3 towns near the epicenter to be
without phone or radio service.

Surprisingly, the small town at the epicenter (Quillagua, pop. 180)
only had 1 person injured.

Chile's ONEMI reported no tsunami threat. Here is their current
Mercalli scale report:

Region of Arica Parinacota:
Arica, VI grade

Region of Tarapacá:
Huara, Alto Hospicio amd Iquique, VI grade

Region of Antofagasta:
Tocopilla, VIII grade
María Elena, Calama, Mejillones, Baquedano y Antofagasta, VII grade

Region of Atacama:
Chañaral, Caldera, Copiapó y Tierra Amarilla, V grade
Huasco, Freirina, Vallenar y Alto del Carmen, III grade

Regieon of Coquimbo:
La Serena y Coquimbo, III grade

Region of Valparaíso:
Valparaíso y Viña del Mar, II grade

The young specialist in English Lit, ...lectured me severely on the
fact that in every century people have thought they understood the
Universe at last, and in every century they were proved to be wrong.
It follows that the one thing we can say about our modern "knowledge"
is that it is wrong.

.... My answer to him was, "... when people thought the Earth was flat,
they were wrong. When people thought the Earth was spherical they were
wrong. But if you think that thinking the Earth is spherical is just
as wrong as thinking the Earth is flat, then your view is wronger than
both of them put together."
