Maybe I'm just dumb, but it seems to me that there has been a whole
lot of seismicity south of the Loyalty Islands in the M5 to M6 range,
but nothing M7 or bigger.
How do you know this?
I signed up with the USGS earthquake notification service - I get email
notification of all global events M>=5, and local events M > 1. For
example, I just got email notification of the M7+ quakes near the Auckland
Islands and south of the Marianas Islands overnight. That too is kinda
odd, isn't it? Two big quakes (Mw 7.0, Mw 7.3) on two widely seperated
faults three hours apart?
Anyhow, to fill your email inbox with lovely data instead of ugly spam, go
tohttp://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/ens/ and sign up.
You could search for: { "loyalty islands" +7. ~earthquakes }.
Or search the NEIS database for the parameter you are after. A quick
search of major quakes from 1998 only shows 1 large quake ther, -using
Open Office so I'm not sure of the efficacy of the search term{
2005 04 11 - Southeast of the Loyalty Islands - M 6.7
I'll remove the lower mag ones now I noticed them and post a long list
for your delectation.
