Re: Video of Chilean quake

Hello Bella. How are you this evening? Yeah, that was some strong shaking
for a 6.2. In that video, I saw some chunks (apparently of the bridge)
fall into the water, which was the main reason I was very surprised that
they didn't immediately close it.

Hey, George. Doing pretty well, thanks. Yep - there was a chunk
dangling after the worst of the swaying was over, too. Those lamp
posts were flopping around like they were made of cardboard, though I
didn't notice any that had fallen. They should have closed it --
maybe there just weren't enough people around at the time; Aysen
doesn't look like a very big town. Local police and other authorities
would have been at the fjord pulling people out of the water and
looking for those lost. I guess even the scientists were doing that!
But still -- it was lucky people using the bridge didn't have
problems.

The strongest earthquake I've ever been in was a 5.4, but I wasn't at
the epicenter, and was actually 7 stories up in an earthquake-proofed
building in San Francisco, where it woke me up and only felt like a
vibrating bed machine. Nothing even fell off the table or anything
like that. Maybe that gave me unrealistic expectations. Both of
these videos were at the epicenter, or very close to it. Am not
really sure how this works, but am guessing that at least in the land
sections there is very little sediment there, and perhaps also very
large sections of rather dense rock coming up to the surface from
depth, so there was very little damping of the waves. Just a guess,
and a very unscientific one at that.
