As an afterthought, the reason they had the characters in /Dante's
Peak/ drive over the lava flow is probably because in reality they
could have easily outrun it in a truck. It *had* to be impossible,
just as most laypeople who have heard of them probably understand (from
straight documentaries as well as expert commentary on TV) that you
can't outrun a nuee ardente in a pickup truck or anything else. The
whole essence of fun in a disaster movie is turning a real danger into
a fantasy so that the audience can come to grips with it more easily.
That is an educational process, too, in its own way. It does need to
have a factual basis to spring from, however.
