(FYI - I am a Montana native, hence the personal interest in this area.)
Two main reasons...
Use a fixed width font so all characters, including spaces, are of
equal width.
Don't use <TAB>'s. Your software may use five spaces for a TAB but
mine may use 3 when viewing. Just hit <SPACE> a bunch of times.
