There's another side to this, so let's have a look.

I'm sorry, Petra, but the $3 tomato argument is just plain
wrong. Studies have already been done that show that if
the existing agriculture population were to be given a
proper wage, it would only increase the retail cost of
agriculture products by about 5-7%.

Let me teach you something about economics based on my
experiences in the CD manufacturing industry. When you buy
a brand new CD from Tower Records, how much does it cost?
About $15, right? Do you know how much it costs to
manufacture that disc, finished and in the package? It
can be as low as 15 cents per package. So, that's a 100x
markup between manufacturer and retailer.

Do you know who get's that money? Certainly not the manufacturer.
And very little to the artist, too. Half of that $15 goes
to Tower Records. Standard markup in retail is a minimum
2x. I know, I've worked there too. Anyway, some goes to the
distributor, and some to the artists, but most goes to the
producer. The artist get's maybe a buck of that $15.

So, even if you doubled the wage of the manufacturer, it
would have little impact on the final cost of the product.

The only reason there would be $3 tomatoes would be because
of unremitting excessive greed. At each step from manufacture
to retail, the small increase in manufacturing cost would
be doubled (or worse) at each step to result in that $3
tomato.

Don't blame the consumer.

Don't blame the farm worker.

Blame everyone else in between for being greedy and using
any excuse to raise profits.
