Life Is An Adventure.... So Live It!
Hi Petra. I know you didn't get into the Susanville area, but the
first picture is off some rock strata along the road just before you
head down into Susanville. The red rock is called Rojas Terra. This
is one of the few places it can be seen.
The other three pictures are of a place called "The Sulphur Works and
Bumpass Hell." While I was there I got the chance to talk with one
of the rangers there. He told me the temperature of the water has been
steadily increasing, but there doesn't appear to have been any change
in the flow.
Further up the road is another place noted for its hot sulphur springs.
It is known as Bumpass Hell. An explorer named Bumpass, pronounced
Bump- uss lost his leg when he fell into a mud pot, the second time.
Seems the first time didn't teach him anything. No one has a problem
in finding the place. You can smell it long before you reach it.
Bumpass Hell is what remains of Mount Tehama.
In the parking lot above Bumpass Hell there is a hugh boulder. You
can't miss it. It's the only one there. It is referred to as
being an "erratic". It is solid granite, which is not native to
the area. It was deposited there by glacier activity many thousands of
years ago. I always have a hard time with that, as I didn't think
glaciers got that high in that area.
My trip to Parkfield was anticlimactic. I followed the San Andreas
fault all the way down. There are some places where it sticks out like
a sore thumb.
I stopped at the "marker" in Bear Valley and it appears the fault
is moving right along. Looks like there has been about an inch of
movement in the last 6 years. San Benito County is going to have to
fix the road one of these days although I won't hold my breath
waiting for that to happen. Take Care...Don
