Nice Trip to Mount Lassen

Hi All,
I had an nice trip to Lassen Park today. I went through the Clear Lake
area last night and that was interesting. The red soils look like
blood washed into the cracks in the pavement in the dark. I went on a
road I've never been on before and it wound all around through the
mountains and there was nothing around. When I saw the sign which said
Elk, Next 7 Miles I got a little concerned. If I hit one of those I'd
be toast for sure.
Anyway, I went up to Red Bluff and stayed over and then headed for
Lassen early this morning. It was beautiful. The snow level was about
6,000 feet, clean and pristine. The trees looked so green and the sun
was out and though cool at 41°, pleasant.
I wanted to check the distance from the mountain as to where the rock
fall went out. I have to check and see if those were ejected in the
1915 eruption or a prior eruption by Mt. Tehama, which is the central
volcano of which Lassen is actually a vent. It is 70 miles at the
greatest distance and at 35 miles closest to the volcano. Some of those
rocks are as large as a microwave oven and the majority a little larger
than a softball. The distance from the mountain didn't seem to make
any difference as to how far away the size of the largest rocks went.
It was fairly well an even distribution of large and small rocks from
the outer edge to the closer in area. But they number in the
thousands. I was rather in a hurry so didn't collect any of them, but
they look like they are high in iron content due to the rust which has
formed on them. (You geologists will know this better than I do.)
Quite a few years ago when I went there the first time I found basalt
tubes measuring about 2 to 4 inches in length with about a dime sized
center. They were floating near the eastern edge of Lake Almanor, but
apparently so many people collected them that they have now vanished
entirely.
This area is so beautiful and summers spent camping under the stars are
marvelous. It seems as though the entire galaxy were just overhead.
Fortunately, it hasn't grown much and those starlit nights are still
available for viewing. During the daytime the little chipmunks come
out to play and in the early evening, the deer come into the
campgrounds looking for a handout and they are so amazing when you see
them up close. And last, but surely not least, the locals are very
nice as well. I had breakfast today at the Kopper Kettle which is well
know for vast amounts of food and even though I took a half order it
was to much. But ever so good.
