Here are some benchmarks on USB/Firewire HDDs VS my IDE RAID 0+1:
Seagate 200GB
USB interface
Drive Index : 19MB/s
Benchmark Breakdown
Buffered Read : 18 MB/s
Sequential Read : 20 MB/s
Random Read : 17 MB/s
Buffered Write : 27 MB/s
Sequential Write : 25 MB/s
Random Write : 23 MB/s
Average Access Time : 10 ms (estimated)
Drive
Drive Type : Hard Disk
Total Size : 186GB
Free Space : 184GB, 100%
Seagate 200GB
Firewire interface
Drive Index : 35MB/s
Benchmark Breakdown
Buffered Read : 30 MB/s
Sequential Read : 41 MB/s
Random Read : 30 MB/s
Buffered Write : 29 MB/s
Sequential Write : 29 MB/s
Random Write : 26 MB/s
Average Access Time : 8 ms (estimated)
Drive
Drive Type : Hard Disk
Total Size : 186GB
Free Space : 184GB, 100%
My RAID system
4 Western Digital WD400JB caviar 40GB HDDs
Gigabyte ITE Disk Array RAID 0+1
Benchmark Breakdown
SiSoftware Sandra
Buffered Read : 59 MB/s
Sequential Read : 44 MB/s
Random Read : 2886 kB/s
Buffered Write : 8 MB/s
Sequential Write : 21 MB/s
Random Write : 7 MB/s
Average Access Time : 21 ms (estimated)
Drive
Drive Type : Hard Disk
Total Size : 75GB
Free Space : 8GB, 100%
This is actually slow for a RAID array. Note, this RAID array only has 8GB
of free space (I use it for storage only with no page file, no programs,
and no OS on it), so, as the benchmark indicates, it doesn't run as fast at
it could. When I first installed it, and benchmarked it, the buffered read
was 99 MB/S (essentially, it ran as fast as the disks would allow). It
also hasn't been defragged or in a while. And I haven't bothered cleaning
off unneeded files in a while. In contrast, the benchmark for the other
HDD with both configurations were for a HDD that was mostly empty of data.
Also note that although the RAID consists of 4-40GB HDDs, for a total of
160 GD of storage, I actually only have 80 GB (75 reported) of storage.
The reason for this is because Windoes sees a RAID 0+1 system with four
drives as one large drive. RAID 0+1 runs at the full speed allowable for
the drive, but uses half of the storage space in parity mode, essentially
backing up the data as it is written. Considering that it has to
essentially write the data twice, it is still very fast.
But if it is mobility you need, you can do worse than the Seagate, above.
