In regard to the original question regarding old coordinate systems
and their current relation to WGS84, I have been writing a monthly
column in "Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing" since 1997
on exactly that subject. All of my past columns are available for
free downloads in PDF format from:

www.ASPRS.org/resources/GRIDS

There's over 100 countries geodetic histories along with the
definitions of their coordinate origins and relations to WGS84. When
appropriate, WWII anecdotes are related.
