Multisystem VCR to NTSC TV no colour

I hooked up a Sony Multisystem VHS VCR to a Sony (Colombian) NTSC TV. As I
imagined PAL tapes (when the VCR was set to PAL) sounded fine but the image
rolled and had no colour-it should work with a multi system TV, I hope. I
also thought that if I pop in a NTSC tape, set the VCR to NTSC (4.43) and
remain connected (through two phono cables) to the aforementioned Sony NTSC
TV tapes should play correctly. The sound is fine but the picture is in
black and white. Does anyone have any idea why NTSC tapes don't play
correctly through this set up. I think the Colombian TV uses the same
version of NTSC as used in the USA (NTSC-M). There were some switches on the
back of the VCR that I didn't understand....one was 'K' the other 'L', I
think.
