I want to find out some information on GPS surveying in the UK. I have
searched the web but haven't really got far - most sites seem to assume
good
knowledge which I haven't got!

Basically i am an 'old fashioned' surveyor using level and staff to work
from bench marks but I have lots of levels to take in a short period, My
questions are:

1. Is it possible to get accurate height levels (plus or minus 50mm or
better) at any point on the ground using GPS?

2. What sort of equipment would I need?

3. Is it necessary to set up some kind of 'base station' to get accuracy?
If
so what sort of range would be covered?

4. What sort of costs involved?

5. Coverage - could the equipment work anywhere?

The information that I seem to be getting is that it is possible to use
GPS
but that current satelite and equipment technology is 'not quite there'.
Equipment would cost at least £25,000. A base station would possibly be
needed and that may need to be set up for a few hours to get a fine
accuracy. Other surveyors have said that due to the cost of the equipment
and time to set up I might as well stick with the 'conventional' methods.
I
did invest in a Leica Sprinter level but of course you still need to work
from benchmarks, up and downhill and round corners which is what takes all
the time and of course subsidence in mining areas also requires extensive
tieing in to remote benchmarks

Due to the cost of GPS, and it is still in its "intfancy" as far as i am
concerned, i would go robotic total station.
If you fancy a trial on GPS talk to Leica-they are very helpfull
