Deming... what the heck is error proofing?
There exists a thing called "poka yoke", which is Japanese for "mistake
proofing" or "error prevention". The example I saw was that of making an
electrical switch that needed to have two springs installed. The previous
procedure was for the operator to grab a spring out of a big box of springs
at their workstation, install it, grab another spring, install it, and send
the switch on. Sometimes they forgot one or both of the strings. The
revised procedure was for the operator to pull two springs out of the big
box at their workstation and put them in a little box at their workstation,
then take the springs out of the little box to install them. When they
thought they were done with the switch, they checked the little box before
sending the switch on - if the little box wasn't empty, they forgot to
install a spring.
