I want to install a pair of 240v 8 foot flourescents above the kitchen
cabinets to give some uplighting in a rather dim kitchen.
Not having been concerned with lighting technology for a while, I'm
wondering if there has been any developments in flourescents that I ought to
be aware of. What sort of lumens/watt can be achieved these days ? With
what sort of tubes and control gear ?
Grateful for any advice!

I'm not sure what type of equipment is available in your
part of the world (I'm in the US), but by using modern T8
or T5 lamps with rare earth phosphors and electronic
ballasts (control gear) you should be able to both good
color rendition and about 100 lm/W including ballast losses.
