A Major Reorganization at IESNA
Your humble editor has learned that IESNA is planning a major
reorganization. Below are the key changes
· Sections will be grouped into Districts and two Districts will form
each of four Regions - Midwest, Northeast, South and West. Each
District will elect a Chair and a Vice Chair. Each Region shall vote
for a Regional Director, who will serve on the Board of Directors. No
more RVP's. A Section and Region Coordinator will be hired to assume
many of the paperwork and process duties of the current Regional Vice
Presidents .
· The hiring of a Committee Administrator will remove administrative
work from the Society's Vice Presidents.
· An Education Program Manager will be hired and be primarily
responsible for the development of education programs.
· Committees will be restructured and report progress to the Board of
Directors through the Committee Administrator.
· Vice President will be the title of the President-elect of the
Society.
· With the committee administration work removed from the current Vice
Presidents of the Society these positions will be changed to roles of
Director.
· The new Board of Directors will consist of fifteen, voting, elected
volunteers and the Executive Vice President (without vote).
· Revised the Society's mission statement and created a vision
statement
· Development of a new brand identity for the Society
· Strengthen its commitment to innovative research
A reorganization of this magnitude takes Board approval and, more
importantly, membership approval. The Board approved this initiative
at the LIGHTFAIR 2007 BOD meeting with little discussion. Why so
little discussion? We were told that the Board had been working on
this for some time and had several committees appointed. When the plan
came together, there were few surprises because the current Board was
deeply involved in developing this strategy.
The bylaw amendment ballot should arrive to membership later this
month.
EDITOR'S NOTE:
If one compared the IESNA of 2007 with the IESNA of 1977, the method
of doing business is the same. Although the documents are now emailed,
the process has changed little. This is the boldest move we have seen
from the Society and we feel that it better recognizes the many
changes in our industry. It is a good plan which we endorse and we
urge the membership to vote for this bold new direction.
