They used to be sold for about three or four dollars in Coles
supermarkets in Australia - four steps of dimming plus off and full on
an incandescent lamp (I think they came in a 60W and 100W package). I
had them in my bedroom in a rental when I was still studying. I guess
1996? A decade ago. How time flies. Actually, I found that they
lasted much longer than normal incandescents - perhaps the circuit did
some smoothing of spikes or suchlike?
The chip has an unavoidable voltage drop, so the voltage on
the lamp is reduced and this will extend life even at "full"
output. If the lamp is dimmed, the life will be extended
further.
