Roger,
This is not a colorimeter in the sense of the word that you recognize. In
the early days of analytical chemistry, any instrument for reading the
visible transmittance of a chemical solution - for the purpose of
determining the concentration of the solute - was known as a colorimeter.
The design of this instrument dates to 1870 - well before the development of
the CIE system of colorimetry. See the following link for further details.
