I'm translating some documents from German to English and have come
across a slight problem. The German document talks about the
"Dehnsteifigkeit" of piles, literally, the strain stiffness of piles.
But I cannot satisfactorily verify this on the web. The notation used
for this is EJ. I'm afraid I don't much more context, it is only
mentioned briefly. No, wait, a foundation slab is being designed and if
it located on weak soil, some piles may be required.
Alan:
It sort of sounds like they are trying to describe the axial shortening
(strain) that occurs in the piles when they are loaded.
I think, but am not positive, that for a structure that is partially
supported by soil and partially by piles, you would want a pile that has
the same strain characteristics as the soil so that they deflect downward
together.
