Another dodge that might be useful is having a high-power battery
driving the vehicle and continually being recharged by a low-power /
high-energy battery. For example, Thomas Edison should have used a
lead-acid in series with his iron-nickel one. In fact, I should try
this myself instead of just theorizing about it.

If you want a complete recharge in ten minutes, this won't work, of
course. But a 100 kW-hr car will rarely need to put out 100 kW for
more than a minute (unless it's a race car). So you can have 2 kW-hr
of laptop-computer batteries and 98 of the cheaper variety -- although
200 W-hr/kg isn't very high-energy for the price.
