Re: Battery capacity

The date codes indicate Feb and Mar 06. The sp is between 1.275 and
1.300 on my meter.

Larry,

Check the manufacturing date code. They should be recharged with in
6 months of the manufacturing date if they are kept at 77F. If they
were stored at a higher temperature then the six months goes down. If
it is over six months then request the manufacturer if they were
recharged ? If not ask their recommendation.

One indication of a fully charged cell will be float current. At
the end of charge the current should be around 200 mA. Another
indiation is Specific gravity. Your specific gravity reading indicates
that some cells are not fully charged. Normally you can charge about
80% within 24 hours and the remaining 20% takes about 7 days at a float
charge.

If you charge them at a boost charge voltage (normally at 2.35 V per
cell) and if you discharge them immediately after that you will see
reduced capacity. This is because of the gas entrapment with in the
pores of the plates and less available surface area for the reaction.

Also to find out the 50% depth of discharge it is not linear with
the voltage. Consult the discharge table provided by the manufacturer.

I hope this information helps you.

Interesting....I have noticed that when I turn off the load the voltage
go up a couple of percentage points, ie, a load voltage of 12.2 volts
goes up to 12.4 when I turn off the load. Is that what you are talking
about?

That's it! There's probably some low-voltage cutoff you should use if
it's not already built into your inverter, but you really need to get
your connections fixed before you do anything else. Use something
like http://geekho.com/ClampTerminal.
