cells that are in question. Due to the age of the batteries, you apparently have sulfated cells which is evidenced by "two of the batteries have a cell that never seems to make it into the green as far as specific gravity is concerned".
there is a product called "battery equaliser" that claims to reverse sulphation when added to an ailing battery. there was a product called VX6 a number of yrs ago that claimed to do the same thing. if VX6 worked it would still be around, and if "battery equaliser" worked it would probably have been incorporated into new batteries. sulphation is a fact of life; lead acid batteries are really pretty delicate creatures and even when maintained meticulously they age and die, mostly from sulphation.
sometimes you can remove some of the sulphate crystals off the plates and restore some lost capacity by charging at a higher voltage. i wouldn't count on it... to prevent sulphation NEVER let your batteries sit in a partially discharged state; even a few hours will cause irrepairable damage (unless 'battery equaliser' works):)
