NiMH cells are less tolerant of lengthy or continuous overcharge than their predecessors the NiCd cells. For just the reasons you cite, a timer type charger is a particularly poor design for charging NiMH cells.
Oops! I didn't know that.
Don't get hung up on whether you can get 300 or 1000 cycles out of a cell.
In my case, using batteries only for a walkman, it's certainly true. And for quite a lot of people too. But I've been told that digital cameras drain batteries very rapidly. So, I suppose that someone who would keep his camera in ready to shoot condition at all times could easily get to 300 recharges.
You'll never have them that long. They'll die of other causes
What could that be?

Maha makes a number of chargers, all of which are the proper type. You can find them on the web.
I don't like buying on the web, leaving my credit card number to people whose face I've never seen. Just an old reflex, I suppose.
Just a few of the many others are the Ray-O-Vac PS4 and Duracell CEF80NC (both older models which might have been replaced by newer ones), and Sanyo NC-MQH01U. I just purchased the Sanyo -- it's small, lightweight, and handles worldwide mains voltages.
I've never seen Sanyo batteries in store. I'll check with the company tomorrow.
Some chargers charge cells in pairs.
Most, I believe, even the little crap I bought. (Instructions say: dual channel charging.) Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it: I would have charged mainly to let time discharge the batteries. Considering I could keep 2 batteries in a new state for a year or two, I suppose I will end up saving on the price of alcalines but it's just that I feel this piece of junk is not worth half the price. At a time when the MIT plans to produce 100$ laptop computers for Third World countries, those chargers really seem to me like easy money. Too easy.
There's a lot of good information and tutorials on the web, plus I'm sure a fair amount of bad information.
When you know nothing on the matter, guessing which is which is sometimes quite a burden.
Maybe someone else can recommend a good tutorial for you.
Yes. Something very simple, though. But the information you gave me, including the parts I deleted, already pretty much answers my questions.
Thanks a lot!
Bernard.
