Without sounding like a jerk (I frequently do), do you know how to use it? You need to turn it on, move it around a good bit close to the work for a "while" (probably a minute or more with the thickness of the steel) then the trick ... move it far (at least a foot) away before turning it off.
If it is turned off in near contact, the AC field can be at a peak and do what you saw.

I used to do that "magic" trick with a soldering gun. I could either magnetize or demagnetize a nail or screwdriver, by onlookers' choice, using what "looked like" identical procedures.
