Glycerol while technically not a fat is used in producing plasmid DNA
from E. coli. In terms of carbon glycerol and glucose are almost
identical in terms of the C they contribute they can contribute to cell
growth. Less acetate produced when you grow E. coli with 1, 2,
3-propanetriol to produce plasmid DNA verses glucose. It cost a lot
less too.
Sorbitol is another option.
Tastes good on waffles too!
