HI Judy
Yes your correct we use large walk ins with mobile racks etc. I'm UK
based and there is an very high level of food microbiology conducted
here.
I too require full transparency for some applications but like your
self there are situations where this is not the case.
I have contacted two Plastics manufacturers today, one sort of laughed
( LOL) the second sees a definite possibility to get a commercial edge
with the idea of disposable card or alternate (cheaper) plastic
lids..Hurrah
My thinking in is this area is that there must be a way to be
ecologically more dillgent. Our plastic waste is currently
autoclauved, baggedand then by law sent for further processing and
disposal. I think disoposal is either incineration or "land fill" both
of which are not eco freindly. My idea of sterile card based plates
would mean the whole end product would be rapidly biodegrable after
decontamination..I kind of like that:)

Obviously all those foods aren't keeping you busy enough.
It's not just the plates. You'll have the beakers or tips for your spiral
plater, possibly spreaders, pipettes etc.
It would probably be just economic to burn it all in a modern incinerator
which removed all the pollutants and utilize the heat generated.
btw landfill is extremely expensive. I our local trust is now trialing
sending its non clinical waste for treatment (I think microwaving) and
then pelletted for use as insulation or something. We were debating whether
our waste should go as it's the same as yours, virtually all non clinical,
few pathogens and autoclaved, but decided to leave it as it was.
