population sums

Hi All,
I have been trying to figure out a way to approximate the total number
of individuals that have ever lived within a population over the
course of many generations. I have tried looking at Malthusian and
Verhulst exponential growth models, but it seems that I cannot wrap my
head around how to extract a total sum of individuals *that have ever
lived* in a population for X number of years or X number of
generations. (Granted I am an undergraduate and not yet taken any
statistics classes.)
I originally became curious about this is as I have been researching
different ways to judge fitness of the genomes of computer simulated
populations of organisms.
Any help figuring this out would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryan
