Re: Will SETI@home roast my CPU?

There appears to be a misunderstanding here.

When any PC (or laptop) is switched on and working the energy and heat
dissipation by the CPU is not affected by applications. The CPU is
continuosly running the operating system when it is not executing
application code. The activity of the CPU at a physical level is the
same either way.

The only way the SETI@HOME application can make a difference is if it
prevents the system hybernating or going into some power saving mode
during idol time, but that usually only happens when there is no user
activity. At all other times the machine is either up and running
normally or it is not. If that causes temperature stability or
overheating then the machine is faulty and S@H won't make any
difference.

I suspect that someone has had problems with their system and wrongly
blamed the SETI project for it.

What about all this?I understand that computers are tested and
designed to work at full
100% for long periods of time so, what is the problem? Is it really so
bad? Can my CPU be burned severely? I am seeking for the opinion of
most experienced users of SETI software.

Desktop CPUs can handle this no problem, as they have decent cooling.
Laptops, on the other hand, can have major problems. My PII 400 PC has
been doing S@H since 1999 24/7 with no issues. My other computer, a
Mac Mini (yes, although Apple calls it a desktop machine, it really is a
laptop in a box) gets very hot - the CPU reaches 94 C (room temp 17 C).
It is only 6 C from its maximum rated temp of 100 C (Intel specs).

Thank you very much for your support, I really appreciate it.
So, the conclusion for all this is: the overheating produced for
running SETI@home does not damage CPU as long as it has a proper
cooling system. And all previous comments about roasted CPUs are just
"Urban legends"
Any more comments?

Marco
