What about all this?I understand that computers are tested and
designed to work at full
100% for long periods of time so, what is the problem? Is it
really so
bad? Can my CPU be burned severely? I am seeking for the opinion of
most experienced users of SETI software.
Desktop CPUs can handle this no problem, as they have decent cooling.
Laptops, on the other hand, can have major problems. My PII 400 PC
has
been doing S@H since 1999 24/7 with no issues. My other computer, a
Mac Mini (yes, although Apple calls it a desktop machine, it really
is a
laptop in a box) gets very hot - the CPU reaches 94 C (room temp 17
C).
It is only 6 C from its maximum rated temp of 100 C (Intel specs).
Thank you very much for your support, I really appreciate it.
So, the conclusion for all this is: the overheating produced for
running SETI@home does not damage CPU as long as it has a proper
cooling system. And all previous comments about roasted CPUs are just
"Urban legends"
Any more comments?

Marco

Freedom is not a permission for chaos.
Also, on a laptop, the extra heat won't do the battery any good.

I have one desktop PC that's been crunching S@H 24/7 since 1999, and
another since 2003. They only rest when the power is out or Berkeley
runs out of workunits.

Does Berkeley EVER run out of workunits?

Check here: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

Every once in a while, usually on weekends when no one's there, the
"Results ready to send" will be 0. Most of the time it's because
something crashed; and after everything is up and running again the
bandwidth is filled up with users trying to connect and get more workunits.

And to cover that eventuality, you can set up a second BOINC project
such as CPDN (Climate Prediction). Then your PC won't just sit around
staring idly at the sky when it runs out of SETI WUs :-)
