GENETICISTS FIND STRONG SUPPORT FOR ONE GROUP PEOPLING THE AMERICAS

Listeros,

Flying in the face of recent theories on the peopling of the Americas,
a group of geneticists at the University of Michigan working with
geneticists worldwide are now positing that the Americas were
populated from one group of people in East Asia. They studied 29
Native American groups across North, Central and South America and two
Siberian groups.

A unique genetic variant is widespread in populations across the
Americas suggesting a single wave of migration or multiple waves from
the same place. They say that the genetic variant would not be so
widespread if the migration was from different sources. The only other
place this genetic variant is found is in Siberia. It also appears
that the likely peopling of the Americas by this group is by a coastal
route.

They found that populations in Central America and the Andes show
genetic similarity.
