I have to second that, Dave. I sketch a rough drawing of the project with
"temporary" dimensions and then adjust as I go. Even tho I work with
computers on a daily basis, I've tried several CAD programs and find it
takes me almost as long to do the darn drawing as it does to build the
project.

Well working on a computer everyday has nothing to do with knowing how to
operate a CAD program or knowing how to draw accurately. Don't get me
wrong, CAD programs are a world in themselves. If you were trained or took
drafting instructions formally you would probably think the other way
around. Before PC's were comon place in the late 70's and early 80's I too
drew sketches and did just fine fitting every piece as I went, and it took a
long time for me to finish the piece. Additionally it very often came out
looking just fine but different that the way I invisioned.

When I bought my first CAD program in 1985 the random sketches went out the
door. For the most part I use CAD to tell me what size pieces and how much
wood to buy. I do not dimension everything but only the items that are
critical to the sizing of the project. I feel that having the accurate
drawings cuts production time by at least 2/3's for me.

With that said, If it is a simple project, I use no drawing or sketch at
all.

*Sometimes* I've even been known to make a mistake in cutting (
blush -I admit it ) and it can be easier to adjust the dimensions a tad
rather than toss some good wood.
