Yea, here on the OBX all the meters were down as well. I feel almost
spoiled by instantly knowing what the wind is blowing. Oh well, it
was back to Old School-style yesterday with only the first hand action
reports. Though, at least now we have cell phones!
Interesting when you think about preparing to go sailing 15 years
ago. I lived on the OBX (Nags Head) during the early 90s with no IWS
or cell phones, yet still trekked south. Though, usually I would
receive land line calls from Dimitri M when he worked at HISS, or
Charlie M working at Sailworld noting that the wind was up and to get
down south. Or, I would simply look at the sky and take the gamble to
head south.
Ironically, even today though there is still "road sailing" risk even
with IWS and cell phones. My most recent road sail occurring Wed.
Sometimes these are the most painful since I leave Nags Head when it
is blowing to catch Avon, but by the time I get there, Avon dies, and
Nags Head remain blowing (as seen on my IWS page load on the mobile
phone while standing at Ego Beach in Avon)! I then race back up to
Nags Head, and while halfway there, Avon ramps back up. IWS almost
make the wind chase as much frustrating as it is rewarding?!
Though, I could not live now without IWS, especially here on the OBX!
