Roof rack options

We just got rid of our mini van for a 2004 Ford Explorer. Since we
don't have the captains seats in the middle row (floor room up the
middle), I'm forced to put all my gear on the roof when taking long
trips with the family.
My question is, how accurate are the listed weight ratings for Thule
and Yakima racks? The rack I'm looking at mounts to the factory
rack. The weight rating is about ~50 lbs per bar. All my gear
together weighs ~100 lbs. Should this be a concern on a long trip? I
see lots of other cars with loads that appear to weigh much more then
100 lbs.
