I've been closing vent plugs when I got to the beach thanking
that the board needs a chance to warm up and breathe on the roof
of the car.

After reading http://www.boardlady.com/faqs.htm, it seems like
the best time to close them is at home when loading up the car.

Reasoning:
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Coming out of the garage, the boards are cool relative to
what they'll be on the beach - but not in the water.

- Closing vent plugs before the trip will result in a little
internal pressure once the sun gets to the board.

- But when the board is immersed in water, that internal
pressure will tend to be reduced toward neutral - rather
than negative. i.e. the tendency to suck water though a ding
acquired while sailing will be minimized.
-----------------------------------------------------------

A side benefit would be that if - like I do - you put a spring
clamp on one of the foot straps as an indicator that the vent
plug is open, the clamps can be left at home.

Anybody care to comment?

I was a verified non-venter until a couple of years back. Then my favorite
hard-core Rutger developed a large delam on the bottom that several folks
assured my was due to heat in a bag. Problem was, that board wasn't vented
at all, so I didn't have an option.

We also bought a used Realwind board from Realwind, and Laury told us to be
sure to keep the vent plug out when the board was not in use. Not sure if
this is just a standard caveat, but I decided not to take the risk. The
Realwind plugs fit nicely inside the Chinook plates, so you know you will
always plug the board before attaching a rig.

This raises the other question of having simple rainwater invade the board
during transport on top of a car? I put my boards deck up fin forward...
