My heart goes out to you people and reading this thread has been rather
a shock to me. I've found that now that I am in and out of the straps
with regularity, my ankles are effected. Last year I sprained my ankle
landing a board in shallow water and started to wear neoprene ankle
supports which I optained in a hockey shop. The ankle cured, and I was
able to skate quite seriously last fall. However, I'm finding this
year that blasting in the straps puts a lot of strain on the ankles.

Mine has been fused so to speak. I lost my leg just above the knee and I sail
with a prosthesis. When I do I lock the knee and since the ankle does not
articulate, I sail with a "fused" knee and ankle.
I'd think she might have trouble with the foot straps with that one foot and
may not be able to place her foot actually in the strap but may use the strap
as a foot stop as I do. Having a functional knee makes a world of difference
and is something that I surely wish I had. It keeps me from carving the board
properly when on port (right foot fused) but starboard jibes are fine. I
simply head up and tack on port.
There are various pictures at http://www.windvisions.com/me.html showing how I
sail. A fused ankle will surely impact her windsurfing but she'll still have a
lot more to work with than I do. Bottom line is that she will still be able to
sail just fine.
A second issue might be that of pain. I met a gal once who was in your
friend's situation. She went through the fusing process but limped horribly
afterwards due to constant pain. When I met her she was constantly grimacing
from the pain and she walked with a cane. She was in her mid-twenties.
She finally decided to have her foot amputated. I saw her about a month
post-surgery and didn't recognize her at all. She was wearing a dress and had
a smile on her face, and I didn't realize that she was an amputee until she
re-introduced herself. She was so much better off. She told me that her only
regret was that she didn't get it done three years earlier.
I surely hope your friend does not have this pain and does not have to look at
amputation as an option. Just rest assured that it is an option if it gets
that bad and it is not a life-ending thing. I sure wish I had only lost my
foot but at the same time I'm glad it was not any worse and that I am able to
do as much as I can.
I wish her the best of luck with her surgery if she goes that route.

A friend as an ankle with arthritis that is continuing to get worse and
is limiting her sailing time. She has had evaluations from several
doctors and a last resort option is to fuse the joint. Do you know
anyone that is windsurfing with a fused ankle joint? I'd be interested
in any feedback on how it has impacted their sailing (and if they are
still able to sail).
