Re: broken board rescue technique

This guy broke the board behind the mast track. Not sure if that would
change your technique.

Buy your radio at West Marine. They will give you a 3yr warranty,
which you will probably use. I did not have much luck with the West
Marine brand nor the Standard Horizon. I currently have the Icon model
which is a little smaller and maybe $20 more. The guy behind the
counter claims they have not had to warranty any of them. We'll see.

Keep the radio in a waterproof pouch as well. The West Marine one is
crap but there is a company callled Aquapak (google the internet) that
makes great pouches. I also do not leave the radio in there overnight
so as to let it breathe. Turn on the radio before each session to make
sure it works.

I also carry a whistle, some line, a strobe, and webbed swim gloves.
The kit is attached to my harness. The radio is around my neck under
my wetsuit. My friend just got a waist version of a Camelback and
keeps his stuff in there.

Scary day to have a breakdown.

I broke a board in a similar manner at Treasure two years ago. I got to
keep the back half while the front half floated away. The board was
broken right in front of the mast track. I struggled for a while until
a guy came by and tried to sail it. I saw what he was doing and thought
to myself, "I can do that." So, I sailed the back half of the board
pretty well right up to the breakwater (my guess is about 3/4 mile)
when the CG arrived. Someone had called them without telling me.

That's my third equipment failure, and I still don't have a safety kit.
How dumb am I? I'm sure people have talked about it before, but which
VHF radio should I get (how much $$), and what should I pack it in?

Thanks,
Vic

So a friend of mine told me his harrowing story of getting a massive
jump out in the 3rd Avenue channel last Friday. Landed his board hard
and flat and the thing broke into two pieces. I didn't get all the
details, but he told me it took him all he had and 3 hours to get back
to shore.

There have been occassional threads that I've found helpful regarding
self-rescue for broken booms, masts, etc, but I was thinking to myself,
how would I handle a situation where my board broke into two seperate
pieces? Assuming you were sailing in an area with other sailors,
wouldn't the "cleanest" solution be to send someone back to shore and
have them tow out another board for the boardless sailor? What would
you do if you were out there solo?
