Re: used beginner board choice

Well your right, 100 liters is on the small side, I guess I was
thinking what would be available for cheap around here as there hasn't
been a lot of boards bought in recent history so not alot of boards
getting back on the market in the ideal Washoe beginner size range. Bic
Technos and the like have never been popular at Washoe as well as Go's
et et as the wind and chop just eats them up and Washoe rarely delivers
medium wind days so it is usually full on or nothing so the ideal board
here is small. Thankfully it is full on most days. Anyway, there might
be some 115-120 liter Mistral Explosions, F2 285's or Bic Astro Rocks
collecting dust in someones garage that can be had for cheap locally to
get him started.

Hey Ron,
Yeah, that was kinda my thoughts as well. However, I'm just not sure a
100L board is going to allow reasonable progress w/o total frustration.
It's the age old problem of learning to windsurf: the board you need to
learn the basics of sail/board handling isn't the same board you'll
want after you've learned the basics. I think this is especially true
at a place like washoe where we have consistent shortboard conditions.
No doibt a wide board isn't going to work for the our average days. But
that probably works in his favor to an extent, since the cheaper old
style narrower boards will do all right.

As far as what your brother would need after he gets some
fundimentals would be a 100-115 liter semi floaty shortboard of
9'0-9'6" and a 5.0 and a 6.0 sail. These should be available used,
cheap around here. A Start is not a good choice for Washoe Lake as the
wind is usually nothing or over 18 and since we sail on the windward
shore it is always very choppy and rough. Big wide boards get eaten
here even in the hands of good sailors, that is what you don't see any
here. Little Wahoe Lake is calmer but weeds out by mid June. Hope this
helps. RON
