I agree on the Berkeley Marina, protected and warm waters, not as
challenging as Crissy so you can improve your technique in a safe
environment, rescue boat, lots of sailors looking out for you, clinics
and lessons at the cal-sailing club (www.cal-sailing.org) plus the
Sunday bbq after you sail, great group of windsurfers that will help
you with advice, a 4/3 wetsuit, it can't get better than that. Downside
is traffic from and to SF but if you live in the East Bay or have some
flexibilty at work so that you can avoid rush hours, this is the place
for you.
